Nearly 60% of independent artists surveyed in 2023 reported already using AI in their music projects. This widespread adoption highlights a growing comfort level with this innovative technology within the independent music scene.

The survey delves deeper, exploring specific areas where AI is finding favor. Results indicate that album artwork creation reigns supreme, with a staggering 77% of artists open to using AI tools for this purpose. This suggests that AI’s ability to generate visuals that complement a song’s theme or genre holds immense appeal.

AI’s influence extends beyond aesthetics. 66% of artists expressed interest in utilizing AI for mixing and mastering their music. This demonstrates a recognition of AI’s potential to streamline technical aspects of music production, freeing artists to focus on creative expression.

Furthermore, 62% of respondents showed openness to incorporating AI in music production itself. This suggests a growing willingness to experiment with AI-generated musical elements, potentially leading to novel sonic landscapes within the independent music scene. However, the survey also reveals a cautious approach to songwriting, with only 47% of artists comfortable using AI for this core creative act. This suggests a continued emphasis on human creativity in composing lyrics and melodies, with AI potentially serving as a source of inspiration or a collaborator in the songwriting process.

“It’s encouraging to see so many musicians embracing advancements in technology and utilising AI as a creative aid,” said Lee Parsons, CEO of Ditto Music. His statement emphasizes the company’s commitment to supporting artists in adopting new tools. “At Ditto, we pride ourselves on being ahead of the curve and remain dedicated to providing artists with the latest tools, resources, and support they need to succeed on their own terms.”

With only 28% of respondents stating a complete aversion to using AI for music purposes, Ditto’s findings suggest a clear trend towards AI integration within the independent music scene. As AI capabilities continue to evolve, it’s likely that its influence on independent music will become even more pronounced in the years to come. The future of independent music appears to be one where technology and human creativity go hand-in-hand, with AI acting as a powerful tool for musicians to explore new sonic territories and express themselves in innovative ways.
